U.S. Marines from Marine Forces Reserve and retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Carey Smith, carry the casket of Smith's great uncle, World War II Marine Pfc. James Samuel Smith, during his funeral held in Liberty, Miss., Oct. 17, 2016. Smith was killed in action on Nov. 20, 1943 on the small island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll during World War II. His remains were flown from Hawaii to his hometown of Liberty 73 years after the battle, and recent discovery and repatriation of the Marine.
