James Samuel Smith, after the funeral held for the latter Smith in Liberty, Miss., Oct. 17, 2016. Pfc. Smith was killed in action on Nov. 20, 1943 on the small island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll during World War II. Derrick volunteered to escort Pfc.
