Sgt. Josh Derrick, funeral coordinator with Headquarters Battalion, Marine Forces Reserve, shakes hands with Carey Samuel Smith, nephew of World War II Marine Pfc. James Samuel Smith, after the funeral held for the latter Smith in Liberty, Miss., Oct. 17, 2016. Pfc. Smith was killed in action on Nov. 20, 1943 on the small island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll during World War II. Derrick volunteered to escort Pfc. Smith's remains from Hawaii to his hometown of Liberty 73 years after the battle and recent discovery of his remains. Derrick says he felt "truly honored" to have had the opportunity to bring home a fellow Marine and to experience the bond he has created with Smith's family.
