POHAKULOA TRAINING AREA, Hawaii – A Marine with Combat Logistics Battalion 3 sketches a range card identifying targets and plans his squad’s movement prior to a live-fire exercise at Range 11 aboard Pohakuloa Training Area, Hawaii, as part of Lava Viper, a staple in 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment’s pre-deployment training, on Oct. 20, 2016. Service members taking part in the exercise conducted machine gun drills in order to help new Marines better understand and practice the weapon conditions, firing and reloading of various weaponry. Lava Viper provides the Hawaii-based Marines with an opportunity to conduct various movements, live-fire and tactical training, integrating combined arms exercises, before departing for Integrated Training Exercise aboard Marine Air-Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California, where the battalion will train and be evaluated as a whole.
