Two U.S. Marines from the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment Division confer movement instructions while awaiting an amphibious landing by Marines from the 1st Battalion, 12th Marine Division while on the beach of Bellows Air Force Base, Hawaii, July 11, in support of the Rim of the Pacific Exercise. RIMPAC is a biennial exercise which is intended to increase the tactical proficiency of participating units in a wide array of maritime operations by enhancing military-to-military relations and interoperability. There are 14 nations, 32 ships, five submarines, more than 170 aircraft and 20,000 personnel participating in RIMPAC which is the largest maritime exercise in the world.
