A heavy equipment operator with Marine Wing Support Squadron 274, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward), spreads gravel onto a road attached to the assault strip here. The road is constructed of three, 3-inch layers of gravel that is graded and compacted using a water truck and a heavy roller. The road will provide quick access to the assault strip for equipment used to unload and move supplies. The assault strip at Edinburgh will offer assault and attack aircraft operating in the volatile area of Helmand province a place to refuel and rearm. The strip will also accommodate medical evacuation aircraft. A medical team moved to Edinburgh to bring aid closer to the fight. This strip allows aircraft to deliver wounded personnel to those medical professionals. It’s all part of an overall effort to ensure Edinburgh is a functional expeditionary solution for aviation assets to support ground units in the fight.
