(PELELIU, Republic of Palau) – Flowers rest on a World War II memorial that sits atop of a hill overlooking Orange Beach on the small Pacific island of Peleliu. U.S. Marines of the First Marine Division, and later soldiers of the U.S. Army's 81st Infantry Division, fought to capture an airstrip on the small coral island. This battle was part of a larger offensive campaign known as Operation Forager, which ran from June to November 1944, in the Pacific Theater. Thousands of U.S. Marines died fighting to take the island during World War II.

Service members assigned to the Civic Action Team(CAT) take pride in maintaining and preserving this history of World War II Monuments throughout the region. The CAT Palau mission is to provide construction capabilities, apprenticeship training, medical outreach, community relations, as well as disaster relief and humanitarian support to the Republic of Palau in order to further a positive U.S. presence.

It’s a tri-service rotating team of Army, Air Force and Navy Seabees and each is typically comprised of one officer and 12 enlisted personnel with a variety of engineering and medical skills. Teams have been deploying to Palau for more than 45 years and continue to serve the community in critical areas of need. The team’s dedication to the mission is unmatched and reflected in the quality construction and genuine relationships with the community. (Photo by Amy Forsythe, Defense Media Activity Guam)
