Maj. Gen. Joseph Martin, commanding general of the 1st Infantry Division, addresses members of the Chicago Council for Global Affairs during a forum in Chicago, August 28, 2017. Martin engaged the council in a discussion on the importance of readiness, how readiness is built and shared the attributes of a Soldier. Martin also spoke on Army Total Force, which is intended to create a seamless and holistic “total force” governed by the same interchangeable policies and procedures. He added that the Army Reserve and National Guard make up 53 percent of the U.S. Army, and that some capabilities of the Army only exist in the Guard and Reserve Components. He also shared personal experiences from his 31 years of service, to include deployments to Iraq. Martin, with Command Sgt. Maj. Joseph Cornelison, command sergeant major of the 1st Infantry Division, visited Chicago to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the division during the reopening of the First Division museum in Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Illinois. They additionally visited various venues in the Chicago-land area to commemorate 100 years of service.
