JACKSON, Miss. (Sept. 21, 2017) – Marines from Marine Aviation Training Support Squadron One (MATSS-1) salute during plane-side honors for Pfc. Ray James at the Jackson-Evers International Airport. James, a Mississippi native, was assigned to Company F, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, which landed against stiff Japanese resistance on the small island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll of the Gilbert Islands, in an attempt to secure the island during World War II. James was killed during the battle on Nov. 20, 1943. He will be buried with military honors at Bethany Cemetery in Sylvarena, Miss. His remains were recently identified through the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency that exhumed remains from the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu.
