Members of the 350th Battlefield Airmen Training Squadron (BATS) and from throughout Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland perform "memorial push-ups" during a memorial ceremony honoring Lt. Col. William "Bill" Schroeder while his two boys observe April 7, 2017, at JBSA-Lackland, Texas, Medina Annex. Schroeder's unit found a way to ensure his legacy is remembered. They renamed a drop zone as Schroeder DZ, participated in a Monster Mash, remembrance and log march. On April 8th, 2016 Schroeder recognized a perilous situation developing in the 342nd TRS and reacted swiftly by putting himself between an armed individual and his first sergeant. In the process, he saved lives of other squadron members while being fatally wounded. Schroeder was posthumously awarded the Airman's Medal, given to those that distinguish themselves by a heroic act - usually at the volunteer risk of their lives but not involving combat. He was laid to rest with full military honors on June 16th, 2016 at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia. (U.S. Air Force photo by Andrew C. Patterson)
