Katie Wood, a contracted employee by the Oregon National Guard Youth Program, works on a “Homecoming Tale Collage” with Izabel Gray—daughter of Spc. James Gray who recently returned from Iraq with the 3rd battalion, 116th Cavalry Brigade—during a reintegration event, Oct. 8, at Bagley Hall on the Eastern Oregon University campus. Childcare with special activities was provided at the event where soldiers learned about employment, education, health and other benefits available for veterans. The 30-day event will be followed by a 60-day career and benefits fair where a variety of employers, service providers, and education institution representatives will be on hand. The event is the largest of its kind in the U.S. according to Master Sgt. Phillip Jacques, J9 Operations non-commissioned officer and Reintegration Manager. Hank Bauer, assistant state youth coordinator, said childcare is important at reintegration events because the focus is on all family being there, and children have an opportunity to do age appropriate and deployment related activities.
