Byron Whipple (left,) a ret. Navy Master Chief Petty Officer and Union County Veteran Service Officer, explains options for using the post 9/11 GI Bill to Spc. Bradley Stewart (right), who recently returned from Iraq with 3rd Battalion, 116th Cavalry Brigade, at Loso Hall on the Eastern Oregon University campus during a 30 Day Yellow Ribbon Event, Oct. 8. Stewart said he would like to pass education benefits to his wife, Melissa Stewart (center,) and Whipple provided advice. Approximately 1000 soldiers, families and friends attended the event to learn about career, education, health and other benefits available for veterans. The Yellow Ribbon program provides soldiers returning from deployment with 30-, 60- and 90-day events that explain information about resources for successful reintegration. The 60-day event is scheduled to be organized by the Oregon National Guard reintegration team that has earned national accolades. The program recently changed its name to the Joint Transition Assistance Program, and is expanding to better help all service members in Oregon. The state does not have an active duty military post for any branch of the armed forces.
