The 21st Annual Secretary of Defense Red Ribbon Week Awards Ceremony was held at the Pentagon Hall of Heroes, Oct. 20. Red Ribbon Week originated as a tribute to Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena. The focus on the celebration is to educate individuals, families, and communities on the destructive effects of drugs and the positive life choices available. The Department of Defense award program encourages servicemembers to keep communities drug-free and recognizes outstanding outreach programs. Many outstanding military programs were recognized; the National Guard was honored to receive two.
