Local Japanese school children ascend the USNS Safeguard brow as they board the ship for a tour here. The Safeguard-class salvage ship was invited by the city for a port visit, and, while here, ship personnel are assisting in community service projects and conducting shipboard tours. Onagawa was devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake, March 11, 2011, which triggered a massive tsunami that swept through the area. Safeguard is the first U.S. Navy ship to visit the area since Operation Tomodachi concluded.
