Navy Diver 2nd Class Matthew Young, a native of San Luis Obispo, Calif., demonstrates the use of a SCUBA respirator, during a shipboard tour aboard USNS Safeguard here. Safeguard sailors welcomed hundreds of local children aboard their ship and provided tours throughout the morning. The Safeguard-class salvage ship was invited by city representatives to visit, and while in port, will assist in community service projects and provide tours. Onagawa was devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake, March 11, 2011, which triggered a massive tsunami that swept through the area. Safeguard is the first U.S. Navy ship to visit the area since Operation Tomodachi concluded.
