Local Japanese students examine the fire monitor aboard USNS Safeguard during a shipboard tour here. The Safeguard-class salvage ship was invited by the city for a port visit, and while here, ship personnel are assisting in community service projects and conducting tours. Onagawa was devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake, March 11, 2011, which triggered a massive tsunami that swept through the area. Safeguard is the first U.S. Navy ship to visit the area since Operation Tomodachi concluded.
