Navy Diver 1st Class Joshua Moore places a KM-37 surface-supplied diving helmet on a local student during a shipboard tour aboard USNS Safeguard here. The Safeguard-class salvage ship was invited for a port visit by city representatives, and while here, ship personnel are assisting in community service projects and conducting tours. Onagawa was devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake, March 11, 2011, which triggered a massive tsunami that swept through the area. Safeguard is the first U.S. Navy ship to visit the area since Operation Tomodachi concluded.
