Aircraft rescue firefighter’s suit up in full proximity gear during Ryukyu Warrior 12 on Ie Shima as they wait for explosive ordnance disposal to assess the scene at a simulated training exercise Dec. 6. Proximity gear is turnout gear with an outer layer of heat-reflecting metallic material, used in firefighting applications of extreme heat such as aircraft and chemical fires. Ryukyu Warrior is a training exercise conducted annually with units of 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. The aircraft rescue firefighters are assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 172, Marine Wing Support Group 17, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force.
