Dan Schergen, a metal worker with Support Company, 9th Engineer Support Battalion and a native of Valparaiso, Ind., welds a bolt into place during the construction of a bridge near Combat Outpost Rankel in the district of Garmsir, Helmand province, Jan. 29. The Marines of Bridge Platoon, Alpha Company, 9th Engineer Support Battalion endured a 5-day convoy in order to replace a temporary bridge with a more permanent structure that would increase mobility for Marines operating in the area.
