U.S. Army Pfc. Travis Smith attempts to don and clear his protective mask in nine seconds during the Task Force Maverick Spur Ride Feb. 21 at the clamshell. In an effort to earn their golden combat spurs, 26 participants comprised of soldiers, airmen, sailors and civilians completed a road march and tested their proficiency in various tasks such as land navigation, evaluating a casualty, setting the headspace and timing on a .50-caliber machine gun, and assembling M9, M4, and M249 weapons systems.
