Wiesbaden Garrison commander Col. David Carstens, Kathleen Ketchum Gen. Lucius Clays's granddaughter and grandson Dr. Lucius Clay III at the unveil the newly named Clay Kaserne here, June 14. Clay Kaserne is the namesake of the late Gen. Clay, who was the Military Governor of the U.S. Occupation Zone in Germany from 1947 to 1949. Clay gave orders to begin the air resupply operation that would become known as the "Berlin Airlift." His collaboration with German civilian leaders in founding the state of West Germany won him acclaim as an American "founding father" of the Federal Republic of Germany. The USAREUR is celebrating the 237th U.S. Army birthday by dedicating the installation, housing area and Mission Command Center slated to host the command in the coming year. The command selected significant figures from the U.S. Army's 237 year history with strong U.S.-European ties to dedicate these sites to. The Wiesbaden Naming Ceremonies are also the capstone event of the "USAREUR Strong Week," a seven-day highlight of the training, deployments and historical commemorations that the Army in Europe does throughout the year in support of our nation's strategic and operational goals.
