Sgt. Robert Tickle, with U.S. Army Europe's 1st Battalion, 214th Aviation Regiment, 12th Combat Aviation Brigade and his wife stand in the doorway of their new home during the Newman Village ribbon-cutting ceremony, here June 14. Newman Village is the Army Family Housing area the U.S. Army Europe will call home in the coming year. The housing area will exceed German and U.S. energy standards, using almost 50% less primary energy than allowable. Newman Village takes it's name from the late Col. James R. Newman, who as the Military administrator for Hesse in the 1940's, worked vigorously to assist in rebuilding the German civilian government and the German economy. Newman was also instrumental in the relaxation of censorship and other occupation regulations and oversaw the establishment of first democratic elections. The USAREUR is celebrating the 237th U.S. Army birthday by dedicating the installation, housing area and Mission Command Center slated to host the command in the coming year. The command selected significant figures from the U.S. Army's 237-year history with strong U.S.-European ties to dedicate these sites to. The Wiesbaden Naming Ceremonies are also the capstone event of the "USAREUR Strong Week," a seven-day highlight of the training, deployments and historical commemorations that the Army in Europe does throughout the year in support of our nation's strategic and operational goals.
