U.S. Navy Mine Countermeasures Division 31 (MCMDIV31) Commanding Officer, Commander John Laney briefs media on Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) SCUBA diving gear during the U.S. Northern Command exercise Arctic Edge 2020 (AE20) in Gastineau Channel, Juneau, Alaska. Navy EOD delivers rapid-response, independent, adaptive and scalable units that are mission effective from first detection of an enemy mine to its destruction and exploitation. Other participating naval units include Mine Warfare Division 31 and Naval Oceanography and Mine Warfare Center. Expeditionary Mine Countermeasures (ExMCM) is able to conduct the full find, analyze, and disseminate sequence in addition to the ExMCM detect-to-engage sequence. The Arctic Edge exercise occurs every two years and provides the opportunity to hone current and test future applications of combat operations and weapons capabilities in Arctic and sub-Arctic environments. AE20 will have approximately 1,000 participants, including U.S. active duty, Reserve and National Guard component from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, as well as approximately 55 members of the Canadian Armed Services.
