In April of 2014, The Child’s Primary School San Diego, Calif. created artwork during a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math initiative led by Patrick Earley, Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) Pacific’s Environmental Sciences Branch lead. The piece was auctioned at the annual fundraiser to benefit the student experience at the school. The class painted a Hawaiian Monchong (center left) as well as striped bass, pomfret and sardines to learn about Gyotaku which is an old Japanese tradition to paint a fish with sumi ink made from charcoal to transfer to rice paper. The students stamped the artwork with their thumbprints (bottom right).
