Maj. Gen. Scott Spellmon, selected as the 55th Chief of Engineers, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, visits the South Pacific Border District's Yuma 6 project Aug. 5 where Greg Hegge, deputy district engineer for Programs and Project Management, shows him and Col. Antoinette Gant, Border District Commander, the project area around Morelos Dam on a map. Spellmon visited the district to learn the specifics of the U.S. - Mexico border barrier project Aug. 4 to 6. South Pacific Border District's leadership accompanied Spellmon on a helicopter flight over the border barrier projects between the California state line and Lukeville, Arizona. USACE is providing direction and oversight for Department of Defense-funded construction of border barrier projects from California to Texas. These projects are being executed by USACE, as directed through the U.S. Army by the Secretary of Defense, in response to the Presidential national emergency declaration dated Feb. 15, 2019, requiring the use of the armed forces and authorizing the use of Section 2808 of Title 10, U.S. Code.
