A memorial dedicated to the Japanese who fought during the Battle of Iwo Jima rests atop Mount Suribachi on Iwo To, Japan, formerly known as Iwo Jima, July 26, 2012. American casualties had reached more than 26,000 including approximately 6,800 deaths, while Japanese fatalities reached more than 22,000 during the gruesome February 1945 battle.
