Rear Adm. Tim Weber (left), commander, Naval Medical Forces Pacific (NMFP), a native of Holland, Mich., and the oldest Sailor present, gives the first slice of cake to Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Anthony Depre (right), a native of Manchester, N.J., and the youngest Sailor present, during the I Marine Expeditionary Force celebration of the Navy's 245th birthday at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. According to the Naval History and Hertiage Command, the oldest Sailor gives a slice of cake to the youngest Sailor present, signifying the passing of experience and knowledge from the old to the young of our Navy. The tradition of a cake-cutting ceremony on the Navy's birthday is to renew, annually, every Sailor’s commitment to the Navy and its mission and tthe cake is cut with a sword as a reminder that Sailors and Marines are warriors, "committed to carrying arms so that our nation may live in peace."
