Mind Meld – (Clockwise) FBI Supervisory Special Agent Fred Pflueger, the Task Force team leader, and his assistant team leaders, Tom Black, from the Department of Energy and Lt. Col. Michael Nelson, NDT-2, joined for a short planning meeting at Camp Atterbury, a training center in central Indiana. Following safety briefings, teams departed to their forward operating base, Jefferson Proving Ground, a former weapons testing facility about an hour’s drive to the east. “Everything is going real fast because within the first 48 to 72 hours of detonation we want to get our first samples,” said Sgt. 1st Class Esther Baynes, noncommissioned officer in charge of the collection team. “And we want to get the best sample so DOE can process it,” she added.
