The Department of Justice/FBI serves as the lead federal agency on the NTNF Ground Collections Task Force for the investigation. In addition to command and control of the task force, the FBI has evidentiary oversight, meaning special agents take part in the evidence packaging and transportation of the samples, like the FBI’s Steven Coon, a crisis management specialist who turned samples over to DOE subject matter expert Doug Berning, after shedding his protective gear during a decontamination line.
