Women’s history month is an annual celebration that showcases the contributions women have made in the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields. Dyess Airmen who have made impactful contributions to the Air Force will be highlighted throughout the month of March.
Maj. April Widman is the commander of the 317th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. As the 317th AMXS commander, she leads Airmen who work in nine different Air Force specialties that provide all aspects of flight line maintenance and are responsible for the health of the C-130J Super Hercules fleet at Dyess AFB.
Widman began her career as a KC-135 Stratotanker boom operator in 2000, where she was quickly thrusted into deployments and temporary duties. Serving in the maintenance world as an enlisted Airman and an officer, she adapted to her new lifestyle while serving as a female, a single mom and now as a commander. As her career progressed Widman learned that emotion allows her to be compassionate, empathetic and helps her connect with others.
“I try to lead with compassion and an understanding that each situation and person is different,” Widman said. “My experiences have allowed me to advocate for others like me. My advice to anyone who asks is that there is no one way to success, everyone’s path through life will look different and there is nothing wrong with asking for help along the way.”
