Women’s history month is an annual celebration that showcases the contributions women have made in the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields. Dyess Airmen who have made impactful contributions to the Air Force will be highlighted throughout the month of March.

Capt. Shannon Williams is a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft commander and a group executive officer with the 317th Operations Group. As a C-130J commander, she is in charge of four aircraft that can transport up to 92 paratroopers, 128 passengers and 20 tons of cargo in and out of austere locations while supporting nine combat commands. As a group executive officer, she oversees administration work for 387 personnel within the 317th OG.

Both positions Williams has held during her time at Dyess, she has had the privilege of leading crews around the world while working together to make sound decisions to accomplish the mission. She has also flown a C-21A aircraft and instructed the incoming core of pilots through ground and flight training. In 2015 Williams had the privilege to take the Career Intermission Program which allowed her to take three years off of active duty to focus on her personal life to come back to active duty refreshed. William’s time in the CIP brought a whole new perspective to her career and enabled her to have a healthier work life balance and is more in touch with the struggles and concerns with spouses.

“I try to impact those around me by being an example,” Williams said. “I may not always be the best performer, but I do my best to keep a great attitude and good work ethic. I try to remind people to bloom where they are planted and that your attitude can change everything.”
