U.S. Navy Cmdr. David Bretz, left, the commanding officer of the guided missile destroyer USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109), and Cmdr. Michael Meredith, right, the ship's executive officer, listen as Master Chief Petty Officer Ray Chamberlain, Jason Dunham's command master chief, shares his recollection of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks during a commemoration ceremony aboard the ship Sept. 11, 2012, in the Mediterranean Sea. The event marked the anniversary of the terrorist hijackings of four commercial airliners on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. The hijackers deliberately crashed two of the planes into the World Trade Center in New York and one into the Pentagon. The fourth aircraft crashed near Shanksville, Pa. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks. Jason Dunham was on a scheduled deployment in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.
