U.S. sailors and Marines render a gun salute during a 9/11 remembrance ceremony to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, aboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS New York (LPD 21). Terrorists hijacked four passenger aircraft Sept. 11, 2001. Two of the aircraft were deliberately crashed into the World Trade Center in New York; one was crashed into the Pentagon; the fourth crashed near Shanksville, Pa. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks. New York is part of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group with the embarked 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit built with 7.5 tons of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center.
