Position: Base Kodiak environmental management division officer (GS-13)
Specialty: Environmental
Time in service: 20 years
Career highlights: Jennifer Nutt is responsible for all facets of environmental compliance for the Coast Guard’s largest and most complex Base. She transitioned to Base Kodiak from the Alaska Army National Guard where she served as a dual-status technician, managing the Alaska Army National Guard’s Environmental Program as an Army engineer officer. She recently retired from the Army as a Captain; her career included serving as the commander of two Army engineer units, the 208th Construction Management Team and the 207th Engineer Utility Detachment. Her environmental career began in the Coast Guard as an enlisted marine science technician.
Inspiration: Early in her career, Jennifer served for commanding officer Tracy Riley at a small boat unit in Cape May, New Jersey. She was a great leader and mother who was disciplined, fair, well-respected, and left a lasting-impression on Jennifer. She was the type of woman and leader that Jennifer needed as a role model. Now as a professional and mother herself, Jennifer often reflects on the constant challenge of managing conflicting priorities of home and work but is an example to others that it is possible to have a successful career and family with perseverance, hard work, and some creativity.
Words of wisdom: “Surround yourself with good people who want you to succeed; goals are not achieved alone, they require support in the office, out of the office, and at home,” said Nutt.
Career Goal: Travel and see as much of the world as she can and to one day be in a position to shape and form Coast Guard environmental policy.
