Artwork created by 20-year-old Ahmed of the Dar Sa’ad community in Aden, Yemen in June 2022. Ahmed is among a group of 30 Yemeni youth who have turned their harrowing war experiences into artistic creations to promote peace through the Creativity for Peace Initiative funded by the USAID Yemen Community Together Stronger (YCST) program. “Someone was killed next to me while expressing his opinion. My artwork emphasizes the need for freedom of expressing opinions,” Ahmed said. By emphasizing a range of issues – freedom of expression, inner peace, social oppression, women’s rights – the youth hope to promote social cohesion, participation of women and youth, and reconciliation in their communities. YCST supports local-level initiatives that mitigate conflict, strengthen social cohesion, and promote the peaceful resolution of differences. Photo Credit: YCST.
