Col. Damon Delarosa, U.S Army Corps of Engineers - Alaska District commander, delivered remarks at a groundbreaking ceremony for the 16/34 runway extension on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.

“In the 77-year history of our organization in Alaska, this $309 million project represents the largest construction contract that we have ever awarded,” said Col. Damon Delarosa, district commander. “Now that we are ready to break ground, our team is eager to oversee the next phase of this massive undertaking and build upon the impressive legacy of the Army engineers who have served in the Last Frontier.”

Engineers on the mega-project used cutting-edge technology and innovative techniques to design the project. It will require extensive excavation due to the site topography including the movement of 12 million cubic yards of soil, which is equal to 800,000 dump truck loads. If lined up, those trucks would cover the distance from JBER to San Antonio, Texas.
