Col. Damon Delarosa, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Alaska District commander, speaks to a representative from Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. following a groundbreaking ceremony for the 16/34 runway extension today on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Engineers on the mega-project used cutting-edge technology and innovative techniques to design the project. It will require extensive excavation due to the site topography including the movement of 12 million cubic yards of soil, which is equal to 800,000 dump truck loads. If lined up, those trucks would cover the distance from JBER to San Antonio, Texas.
