Col. Damon Delarosa, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Alaska District commander, and a member of Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. inspect machinery that will be used on the expansion of the 16/34 runway on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. The project will require extensive excavation due to the site topography including the movement of 12 million cubic yards of soil, which is equal to 800,000 dump truck loads. If lined up, those trucks would cover the distance from JBER to San Antonio, Texas. The Alaska District joined Gov. Mike Dunleavy and representatives from the 673d Air Base Wing, 11th Air Force, 3d Wing, Eklutna Tribe and Kiewit for a groundbreaking ceremony today. (U.S. Army photo by Rachel Napolitan)
