SAN DIEGO (Oct. 13, 2022) – Sailors assigned to amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), prepare to moor guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) to a pier, Oct. 13. Mooring lines are used to hold a ship fast to the pier against the effect of wind, current or other forces. Makin Island is currently homeported in San Diego.
