“There is a lot to be thankful for in my career. I am proud of the Marines under my charge and where they have gone in their own careers. I am proud of my achievements as a drill instructor; it required a lot of strength and mental fortitude. But I am most proud of my ability to balance my home and family life while also being a successful Marine.”
U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Cynthia Rutherford, an aviation ordnance systems technician, with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron (MALS) 11, Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.
Rutherford paved the way as the first to join the military in her family. The camaraderie, structure, and challenge confirmed her decision to choose the Marine Corps. After a successful career as an ordnance technician, she became a drill instructor before returning to her field as the production control chief at MALS-11. She continues to strive for excellence with hopes to become an Assistant Marine Officer Instructor at a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program, and later, a first sergeant. Rutherford is a native of Tucumcari, New Mexico. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Courtney A. Robertson)
