This Fort Riley Friday we stop back by the Garrison Headquarters (bldg. 500) for a visit to Ware Parade Field. Essentially the front yard of Garrison HQ, Ware Parade Field is named after Major General Keith L. Ware who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam in 1968. Ware was drafted in July 1941.
After being sent to Officer Candidate School he rose through the ranks becoming a Lt. Colonel by the end of December 1944. After World War II, Ware remained in the U.S. Army becoming one of the first former draftees to reach general officer rank. Ware served in Korea from 1955-57, and from 1964-67 he was the Army's deputy chief of information, then chief of information. He was promoted to Major General in 1966.
Assigned to command the 1st Infantry Division in March 1968, Ware was killed in September 1968 in Vietnam as he was observing from a helicopter while his troops on the ground were closely engaged with the enemy. Anti-aircraft fire brought down Ware's chopper killing him and the four-man crew. He was the second U.S. Army general officer to die in the Vietnam War.
In addition to the parade field, Ware Elementary USD 475 on Fort Riley bears his name. The Army's annual public affairs competition is also named after Ware.
