This Fort Riley Friday we continue our look at the monuments around Cavalry Parade field. Sitting atop a black pedestal just to the south of the Global War on Terrorism Monument is a plaque commemorating the 16th Infantry
Regiment of the Big Red One and their participation in the Vietnam War.
The Regiment's 2nd Battalion was one of the first elements of the regiment to deploy to Vietnam in July of 1965 and took part in Operations Cedar Falls, El Paso, Abilene & Junction City, among others. The 1st Battalion arrived in October 1965 to begin operations. The two battalions fought in almost every campaign of the Vietnam War between 1965 & 1970 and lost 560 men.
The plaque, installed on the parade field on the 50th Anniversary of the Regiment's arrival in Vietnam, outlines the accomplishments of the two battalions.
The 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment Iron Rangers are still an active unit on Fort Riley today. https://www.facebook.com/IronRangers
