This Fort Riley Friday we visit Cavalry Parade Field. Once the center of Fort Riley, Cavalry Parade Field now hosts numerous ceremonies throughout the year.
The buildings that make up Fort Riley's historic district were constructed around a rectangular field with present day Sheridan Ave. as its northern boundary.
An 1867 sketch (pictured) shows officer's quarters on the north
and south sides with enlisted barracks along the east and west sides. With the establishment of separate posts for the Cavalry and Artillery branches in the 1880's the south side officer's quarters and the barracks were
removed and the rectangle became Cavalry Parade Field.
Among the historic events to take place on Cavalry Parade Field, the Ninth Armored Division was activated here in the early days of World War II, Vice Pres. Dick Cheney addressed approx. 10,000 Fort Riley Soldiers in April 2006, and it was site of the 1st Infantry Division's redeployment ceremony as the Big Red One returned to Fort Riley from Germany in August 2006.
Cavalry Parade Field was renovated in summer of 2009. The turf was rehabilitated and covered pavilions with stadium seating were built on both sides of the podium area. Through 2009, Cavalry Parade Field was the site of the annual Fall Apple Day Festival now shared with the larger Artillery Parade Field.
