This Fort Riley Friday we look at the exploits of another unit commemorated with a marker on Cavalry Parade Field. South of the Global War on Terrorism monument and standing next to the monument honoring the 9th Armored Division is a marker describing the heroics of the 3rd Armored Field Artillery
Battalion, 9th Armored Division.
During the WWII Battle of the Bulge, the 3rd Armored Field Artillery Battalion was instrumental in achieving victory. For six days 3rd AFA fired an average of 3,000 rounds per day helping to repel each and every German attack. The unit's fires help hold the center of a 10,000 yard firing line allowing troops to take up positions and muster a counter offense.
With U.S. Army III and XII Corps able to assemble unhindered, the counter offensive would ultimately end the siege of Bastogne and contribute to saving much of Luxembourg. Commanded by Maj. Gen. George Ruhlen, 3rd AFA
participated in the defense of Luxembourg, Bastogne, and the capture of bridge over Rhine River at Remagen.
The marker on Cavalry Parade Field was made possible by the veterans and wives of veterans of the 3rd Armored Field Artillery Battalion in 2005.
