U.S. Navy Sailors aboard the amphibious dock landing ship USS Ashland (LSD-48), open the well deck to ballast the ship in order to launch landing craft utilities during beach landing operations off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, Mar. 4, 2023. The Marines and Sailor aboard the USS Ashland worked hand in hand to conduct LCU operations in preparation for a ship-to-shore movement during exercise Iron Fist 23. Iron Fist is an annual bilateral exercise designed to increase interoperability and strengthen the relationships between the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Navy, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, and the JMSDF.
