Walter Reed National Military Medical Center facility dog Archie's U.S. Marine Corps MARPAT desert vest from a collection housed at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, Virginia. Archie was an honorary USMC colonel and retired as a gunnery sergeant. Facility dogs are being given honorary commissions or are enlisted in a service as a show of respect for their tireless duties comforting patients and staff in need, and boosting morale and mental health. Archie, a German Shepherd, was enlisted in June 2010 and retired on March 7, 2017. Vests worn by facility dogs often have wounded warrior and staff mementos hidden in their pockets, including flight wings and service patches. Archie crossed the Rainbow Bridge on March 28, 2018.
