This #FortRileyFriday we're back on the old Cavalry Post, centered around Cavalry Parade Field.
Over the past couple of weeks we've been telling you how Captain George E. Pond arrived at #FortRiley in 1885 and proceeded to revamp the standard duplex plan for Army officer housing. The results of Capt. Pond's efforts can be seen on both sides of Forsyth Avenue, also known as "Officers Row."
Extending north from Cavalry Parade Field, Forsyth Avenue is named for Col. James A. Forsyth who commanded the 7th U. S. Cavalry in the late 1880s and was the first commandant of the Cavalry and Light Artillery School. In these dozen homes, built between 1887 and 1903, live many of the post's senior officers and commanders, as has been the case for more than one hundred years. Many officers who resided in these homes later became American military heroes in World War Two. Among the more famous were Jonathan Wainwright, Ernie Harmon, H.H. "Hap" Arnold and Terry Allen.
