This #FortRileyFriday we're back on the old Cavalry Post, centered around Cavalry Parade Field.
Cavalry Parade Field started to take the shape we are familiar with between 1886 and 1889. Prior to the rectangular shape we know today, the parade field was a smaller, square-shaped parade ground. Officer's quarters lined the north side while barracks defined the east and west boundaries. By demolishing the old barracks and expanding the parade ground to the east and west, Cavalry Parade Field was created.
New barracks were built on the south side of the parade field. Present day buildings 215 and 221 were built in 1886; buildings 217 and 219 were built in 1887; buildings 223 and the barracks that occupied the current location
of Wainwright Hall (building 211) were built in 1889. (The barracks built at the present site of Wainwright Hall was destroyed by fire in 1945. Wainwright Hall was constructed in 1946.)
Today, buildings 211, 215 and 217 form the Education Services campus; buildings 219 and 221 house the Directorate of Emergency Services police departments; building 223 continues to serve as a barracks.
