Mindy Simonson, a Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) scientific recovery expert (SRE), investigates a dug out metal hit after an Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) sweep during a DPAA recovery operation in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), Nov. 1, 2023. EOD sweeps are performed prior to every dig to ensure the safety of the team and to help locate possible life support evidence that may assist in the identification of a missing service member. There are currently 277 recoverable missing personnel from the Vietnam War whose remains are believed to be in Lao PDR.
