Paying homage to a bygone era of a distinctive paint scheme known as Vandy 1, an F/A-18F Super Hornet from the U.S. Navy’s Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Nine (VX-9), the Vampires, leaves wingtip vortices in its wake while landing on a humid day at Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu in Southern California on Aug. 15, 2023. Based at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, Vandy 1 is the only jet in the U.S. Navy with the gloss-black paint job, red striping and white stars — historically seen only on the commander’s aircraft and flagship of the VX-4 squadron dating back to the 1960s.
