An F/A-18 Super Hornet from the U.S. Navy’s Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Nine (VX-9) makes a so-called dirty pass over Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu in Southern California before landing on Aug. 15, 2023. A dirty pass refers to an airplane flying with flaps and landing gear extended rather than flying in an aerodynamically clean configuration of retracted flaps and gear. VX-9 is based at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake in California, and is also known by its nickname, the Vampires. (U.S. Navy photo by Eric Parsons/Released)
